Claim Tips

Tips To Follow If You Have Just Experienced A Loss

  • The first and most important thing is to remain calm.  Call 911 if you have an immediate life or death emergency or if you experience a fire, explosion,, a motor vehicle accident on your property, a break-in, riot or  civil commotion.  Give yourself time to collect your thoughts.  Your health and the health of your family and or employees is the most important thing.  Building damage can be repaired/replaced.  Your Personal Property/Contents (aside from sentimental items) can be replaced.
  • Call Cornerstone Adjusting, LLC as soon as possible.  We will be able direct you regarding the claims process and if needed, refer you to someone who can perform emergency repairs and or board up as is a provision of your policy.  If you choose not to hire a Public Adjuster, It is your duty to report the loss to your insurance company or their representative (agent) in a prompt manner.
  • Do not remove anything from the premises or disturb the scene in any way.  Your insurance company has a right to inspect the loss and you must do everything possible to preserve the scene, especially with fires.  If you have a plumbing, HVAC or appliance failure, make sure to save the damaged part or appliance for the insurance company to inspect.  Do not repair anything (aside from a plumbing, HVAC part or appliance that failed) until your insurance company has inspected it and given you the okay to repair it.  In the same manner, do not dispose of any personal property/contents until your insurance company has inspected it.  If the items are contaminated, put them outside under a tarp until the insurance company has sent someone to inspect them.
  • If your home is deemed uninhabitable and you are forced to stay in temporary housing such as a hotel and you must eat out,, you must save all of those receipts as the insurance company may demand copies of them..  This would also apply to any unusual additional expenses that you may incur that you would not have had to incur had you not been involved in a loss.
  • Attempt to locate your Insurance policy if you can.  It will help you and your Public Adjuster be better able to determine the potential coverages that you may be entitled to.  Unfortunately, not all policies are the same., which means that some policies contains different coverages..  It is better to know this information up front so that you and your Public Adjuster can set a proper course of action.
  • If you have experienced theft, you must call the local police department immediately to report it to them.  They may or may not respond, but as long as they give you a police report number or blotter number, you have done your due diligence. If you sustain a fire, explosion loss or gas leak, no matter the size, even if you put it out yourself, you must contact the local fire department.
